Research
SS-31 (Szeto-Schiller peptide 31, also known as Elamipretide) is a tetrapeptide that selectively targets cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. Research demonstrates it stabilizes cristae structure, reduces electron leak, and decreases mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Preclinical studies show significant cardioprotective effects in ischemia-reperfusion injury models, including reduced infarct size and preserved cardiac function. Research in aging models indicates SS-31 can reverse age-associated mitochondrial dysfunction and improve physical performance. Studies have also explored its potential in heart failure, renal ischemia, neurodegenerative disease models, and skeletal muscle atrophy. Clinical trials for heart failure have been conducted.
