Research
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a mitochondria-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome. Research has identified it as a key regulator of metabolic homeostasis, acting as a mitochondrial hormone that translocates to the nucleus under metabolic stress. Preclinical studies show MOTS-c improves insulin sensitivity, reduces diet-induced obesity, and enhances exercise capacity in animal models. Mechanistic research indicates it activates AMPK signaling and regulates the folate cycle and de novo purine synthesis. Studies also suggest MOTS-c levels decline with age, positioning it as a subject of longevity and age-related metabolic dysfunction research. All findings are from preclinical models.
